EU-Research Project of the Center for Dynamic Systems Chosen for Funding

01.06.2015 -

An ERA-Net-Program 'Applied Systems Biology' (ERASysAPP) project that is coordinated from the OvGU's Center for Dynamic Systems  was recommended for funding. Coordination of this project is carried out by Jun.-Prof. Steffen Waldherr, who was recruited to the CDS as part of the junior group initiative. New methods for the cultivation of robust biotechnological microorganisms shall be developed with the help of a funding sum of 1 Million Euros. The basics for these methods are systems biology models as well as optimizing algorithms, which are already established by the involved partners. In order to accelerate a commercial exploitation, the project will be additionally supported by the OvGU's transfer- and start up center (Transfer- und Gründerzentrum, TUGZ).

Involved scientists:

  •  Systems Engineer Steffen Waldherr (coordinator, OvGU)
  •  Mathematician Alexander Bockmayr (FU Berlin)
  •  Biologist Frank Bruggeman (FU Amsterdam)
  •  Bioprocess Engineer Vassily Hatzimanikatis (Swiss TU Lausanne)

Project Title / Acronym:
Optimizing Metabolic Regulation in Yeast Production Strains for Dynamic Conditions / ROBUSTYEAST

Why at the OvGU?
The research group 'Theory of Complex Networks' surrounding Steffen Waldherr combines an expertise in mathematical models of biological networks with the application of advanced algorithms for network analysis and optimization. This profile provides an interface for the disciplines that are involved, ranging from mathematics to biology. Therefore, the projects' strings are pulled by the coordinator, Steffen Waldherr, who resides at the OvGU.
