Prof. Peter Benner admitted to acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering

24.11.2025 -

CDS Director Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Peter Benner was elected as a member of acatech, the German Academy of Science and Engineering, by the General Assembly in October 2025. Prof. Peter Benner is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg and Head of the Department of Numerical Methods in Systems and Control Theory.

The German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) aims to achieve sustainable growth through innovation by advising German politics and society.
Professor Peter Benner said about his motivation: "Mathematics is the basis of many developments in engineering and AI. My motivation is to raise the hidden treasures of applied mathematics and make them accessible for further applications."

Such AI-based predictive models are used, among other application, within digital twins , virtual mathematical simulations of real processes.

Peter Benner's current research interests include scientific machine learning, numerical linear and multilinear algebra, model order reduction and reduced-order modeling, numerical methods in systems and control theory, PDE constrained optimization, high-performance computing and power-aware computing, and mathematical software. He is the author of over 700 publications and is an active member of leading German and international mathematical societies , including the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

CDS member Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern was elected as a full member of acatech back in 2013.

acatech -  National Academy of Science and Engineering operates independently, based on facts and with a focus on the common good. It currently has around 600 members from the engineering and natural sciences, medicine, as well as the humanities and social sciences.
