10 million euros for research into sustainable chemical production

10.02.2025 -

The very successful work of the research center Dynamic Systems (CDS) at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg can be continued. The Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of Science provided the research center 10.9 millionen euros from the European Regional Development Fond.

The research of the around 20 working groups from engineering and natural sciences as well as computer science, mathematics and medicine has a  sustainable and "green" chemical production as their goal. The funding notice was handed to the spokespersons of the CDS by the Minister of Science of Saxony-Anhalt, Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann.

More than 100 scientists from six faculties of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems work closely and interdisciplinary together at the center. The research focus of the CDS is on the investigation of complex processes and systems in the areas of chemical production, energy conversion ,and tailor-made active ingredients. Theoretical and experimental research approaches are being tightly connected. For the development, design and implementation of innovative processes, new effective powerful computer tools in combination with artificial intelligence methods are used. The spokespersons of the CDS are the university professors Achim Kienle, Michael Naumann and Kai Sundmacher.

The CDS also forms the core structure of the SmartProSys Cluster of Excellence application from the University of Magdeburg. This research cluster follows the goal of replacing fossil raw materials in chemical production with renewable carbon sources and thus contributing to a climate-neutral society through a sustainable, fully closed circular economy. Especially in regard to the climate goals of the chemical industry, which aims to be climate-neutral by 2045, this research is of great importance. The German Research Foundation (DFG) will decide on the funding of SmartProSys at the end of May 2025.
