Prof. Dr. Peter Benner is the Managing Director at the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg
CDS director Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Peter Benner took over the office of the Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg on January 1st, 2025 for two years. The changeover takes place every two years. He follows CDS member Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai Sundmacher, who held the office since 2023.
Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Peter Benner is the director and head of the group Computational Methods in Systems and Control Theory at the MPI. His credo for his time in office is: "Making a positive impact together and achieving relevant research results".
The team of the MPI can draw a positive balance from the year 2024, which was characterized by a successful review by the Scientific Advisory Board and the initiation of new excellent research and cooperation projects. „I am sure that we will also master the challenges of the new year - stronger and more closely connected than before. Of course, we are hoping for success in the Excellence Strategy, but I am convinced that we will be able to achieve many more interesting and important research results regardless of this!“, says Prof. Peter Benner.
Peter Benner was born 1967 in Kirchen/Sieg. He studied mathematics and economics at the RWTH Aachen. After his doctorate in mathematics in 1997 at the University of Technology Chemnitz-Zwickau, he was a scientific assistant until 2001 at the Center for Technomathematics of the University of Bremen. He habilitated there in 2001. He worked at different Universities before he started his research work with his group Computational Methods in Systems and Control Theory die Forschungsarbeit at the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg in 2010. Since 2011 Peter Benner has been an honorary professor of mathematics at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and heads the research group Numerical Methods in Systems and Control Theory at the Institute of Analysis and Numerics there. Peter Benner is author of over 700 publications in journals and books. Currently, he is in the directory of the research center “Dynamic Systems: Systems Engineering” (CDS) at the OVGU Magdeburg, a board member of the Mathematical Research Data Initiative (MaRDI) and a member of the research initiative SmartProSys.
