The research within the CDS is focused on the analysis, synthesis and control of complex dynamic systems in the fields of energy conversion, chemical production and biomedicine. Main objectives are: the development of new environmentally friendly chemical processes on the basis of residuals and renewable resources, the chemical conversion and storage of electrical energy from renweable resources in the frame of the energy revolution and the development of new pharmaceutically active compounds for biomedical applications.

Mathematical models are the key to reach these goals. They are used for example for computer aided simulation and optimization. This allows to explore in silico different hypotheses and scenarios and thereby reduce the experimental effort.

The area of Energy Conversion is concerned with ensuring a secure supply of electricity and heat from renewable energies. For this purpose, the electricity generated from renewable energies must be stored chemically, e.g. in the form of hydrogen, over a longer period of time. Within the CDS, the development of computer-aided system designs and the optimisation of energy storage is pursued.

The area of Chemical Production deals with the development of new chemical processes from renewable raw materials and biogenic residues as well as for the synthesis of customised particles, which play an important role in many areas of application. Due to the complexity of such production systems, new methods of model-based system design, optimisation and control are required.

The area of Biomedicine is dedicated to personalised therapy strategies for various diseases and the decoding of fundamental cellular processes. The main focus here is on computer-assisted modelling and prediction of molecular and cellular reactions, which are used in therapy planning. Furthermore, new active substances are to be developed as drugs for personalised therapies.

The area of Key Technologies is dedicated to mathematical models that play an important role in the systems under consideration. Besides physical, chemical or biological models from first principles, data driven models from machine learning and artificial intelligence are becoming more and more important. Furthermore, new theoretical methods for model-based mathematical optimisation, complexity reduction, experimental design and control are also developed and implemented in the CDS.
