Developing Advanced AI Methods for Basic Research in the Life Sciences

Biomedicine and artificial intelligence are to be integrated within the newly established Max Planck School. The objective is to train a new generation of scientists capable of developing algorithms that understand, explain, and predict the principles of living systems, making this knowledge directly applicable to molecular design.

The concept was developed under the coordinating leadership of Prof. Karsten Borgwardt, Director at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. Prof. Dr. Peter Benner, Director at the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg, is one of the 32 Fellows and looks forward to fruitful collaboration and excellence in doctoral training.

The first applications for doctoral positions are expected to be accepted starting in autumn 2026. The inaugural BMAI cohort is scheduled to begin their doctoral studies in autumn 2027.

"I am delighted that a fourth Max Planck School is now being founded, allowing us to establish a further nationwide graduate program involving excellent researchers," said Patrick Cramer, President of the Max Planck Society. "The chosen professional focus addresses a particular challenge: the interface between biomedicine and artificial intelligence. This is the first initiative to systemically bring together universities and non-university institutes across Germany in a graduate program focused on AI. This holds enormous potential for better understanding the causes of health and disease and for generating innovations in diagnostics and therapies."
